He is a member of the Festival Committee, chaired by the cathedral’s Sub-Dean, Canon Leigh Richardson. The current holder of this post is also the Festival Artistic Director. The famous Tudor composer, Thomas Tomkins was born in St Davids in 1572 and was a chorister in the cathedral while his father held the title of “Organist and Master of the Choristers”. The choir’s history goes back over 800 years, with the earliest reference to choristers dating from 1132. The Cathedral Choir is unique in the UK in that its top line consists of girls aged 8 to 18. The daily choral tradition of the cathedral is the musical and liturgical thread which runs through and forms the basis for the Festival, with the Cathedral Choirs being involved in several of the week’s events. Since then it has grown and diversified, introducing its audiences to many new and exciting musical experiences, while promoting and celebrating classical artists and music for which it has gained international renown. The Festival began life in 1979 and was then known as the “Bach Festival”. Recent years have also included some jazz and folk music performances. These include performances of sacred choral music, orchestral and instrumental music, primarily in classical and contemporary styles. The Festival presents between 15 and 20 concerts. St Davids Cathedral Festival is an annual music festival which takes place in the city of St Davids, Pembrokeshire, West Wales for one week during the May/June half-term holiday.
